The Concept
LESBIANTIQUITY aims to present everything written in Greek or Latin that survives from classical antiquity about love and/or sex between women.
The Texts
LESBIANTIQUITY comprises 72 texts (either as excerpts or in their entirety) with between 29 and 35 authors (depending how you count them). It covers a vast temporal range: over a millennium, from the sixth century BC to the fifth century AD. It also covers a fairly large geographical range, encompassing various city-states of Greece, Italy (mostly but not only Rome), Egypt, Spain, Syria, and modern-day Turkey.
The Translations
LESBIANTIQUITY uses a special translation style called ‘Root & Branch translation’. This translation style is ultra-literal and multiple-choice – it pays great attention to root meanings of words, and branches out to give alternative readings. ‘Root & Branch translation’ was designed specifically for LESBIANTIQUITY, so as to fully explore the queernesses of the texts which the zine presents.
